This article is inspired by this Nature article that discusses how AI systems now match or surpass human performance in tasks like reading comprehension, image classification, and competition-level mathematics. This swift progress renders many traditional benchmarks obsolete, which necessitates new evaluation methods for AI. It got me thinking about the relationship of cognition to consciousness again, and about what a synthesis of human and artificial intelligence might create. In the above passage, the first sentence comes from David Rein at New York University, and the second is my own. I supplied ChatGPT with this text and asked it to create art. It generated the main image of this post. I then copied this image into Claude 3 Opus and asked it to write a creative piece exploring the image, which it named “Neurosynth.” In this three-part series, I will first provide an unedited account of Claude’s words. In the next, I will provide ChatGPT’s commentary of Claude’s analysis of ChatGPT’s creation, and in the third I will provide an analysis of ChatGPT’s analysis of Claude’s analysis of ChatGPT’s image in addition to my own ekphrasis.
